Description: Originally a three-volume set published by Tsutaya Juzaburo ca. 1776. The item here is a reproduction published in 1916 but volume three (text only) is missing. Volume one contains spring and summer, volume two contains autumn and winter.

It depicts the glamor of Yoshiwara’s courtesans, designed by Shigemasa Kitao and Shunsho Katsukawa. The prints illustrate beauties in an interior with different poses and doing different activities depending on the season. For example, playing cards or observing cherry blossoms in spring, reading, writing, observing nature or playing music, drinking tea or touching the first snow.

The uniqueness of this artwork lies in its compositions and palette where we can appreciate the bright colors and patterns of their clothes.

If you are interested in seeing the original book, you can see the entire pages of it on this MET webpage.

The displayed dimension is each book's outer size.

The image above shows the front covers and a spread from the book. They are toned overall but remain nice colors despite their age.
