Designer: Tosa Mitsuoki / Kano Yoshinobu Era: Taisho | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print is from the series, 日本木版画粋 (Masterpieces of Japanese Woodblock Prints), a collection of reproductions of various themes and designs published around 1924. The print quality is excellent (for most of the prints) and there are almost no traces of baren on the back, so we assume that it was at least partially machine printed. The accompanying description states that the work is by Tosa Mitsuoki, it appears that this picture of the straw craftsman, is originally a part of the series of 24 folding screen paintings of Edo period craftsmen by Kano Yoshinobu, originally painted around 1615. The picture shows a scene of a straw craftsman sitting outside the porch on a summer afternoon. The straw is hanging and drying while he is cooling off, a young man is bringing some water and fruit. The scene is very bucolic with plants and floral trees around the house, all the elements combined bring to life a scene of a craftsman’s day of work at that time.
