Description: This print is from the series, 日本木版画粋 (Masterpieces of Japanese Woodblock Prints), a collection of reproductions of various themes and designs published around 1924. The print quality is excellent (for most of the prints) and there are almost no traces of baren on the back, so we assume that it was at least partially machine printed.

The accompanying description states that the work is by Tosa Mitsuoki, but it appears that this picture of "katana-shi (刀師)", the swordsmith, is originally a part of the series of 24 folding screen paintings of Edo period craftsmen by Kano Yoshinobu, originally painted around 1615.

Note that the publisher incorporated a great deal of 'antiquing' in the print - imitating the worn condition of the byobu screen - and on top of that we see the natural aging of the woodblock print itself over the past hundred years ...
