Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketManzai DancersSize: 20.0cm by 30.0cm (7.87 in by 11.81 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Miyagawa Choshun Era: Taisho | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print is from the series, 日本木版画粋 (Masterpieces of Japanese Woodblock Prints), a collection of reproductions of various themes and designs published around 1924. The print quality is excellent (for most of the prints) and there are almost no traces of baren on the back, so we assume that it was at least partially machine printed. This print depicts two figures that represent manzai (Japanese comedy) dancers, they would perform their routine during the new year from house to house. We can perceive that the left dancer is holding and playing a small drum marking the beat so that his companion can dance following the rhythm while holding his fan and hiding part of his face. Their clothing are very colorful and vibrant. The left dancer wears a brown kimono with blue feathers motif on the bottom while the one on the right has a blue kimono with red underlayer making a beautiful contrast. Behind them, we can perceive a garland hanging with some leaves and branches attached to it. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
