Description: One of the most famous prints from Hokusai’s celebrated Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series, published c. 1830–1832.

This print depicts Lake Ashi, located in Hakone. Hokusai was captivated by the atmosphere of the lake in the tranquil mountains and captured this moment of stillness while admiring the serene presence of Mount Fuji. The pervasive mist in the artwork creates a calm and hushed atmosphere, erasing any signs of human or wildlife activity. The shrine shown in the center likely represents Hakone Gongen, a sacred place for mountain worship.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction by the Takamizawa Company.
