Designer: Katsushika Hokusai Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This image is part of the famous 'Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji' (Fugaku sanjurokkei) series by Hokusai. What started as a plan for thirty-six works later grew to a total of forty-six images due to popular demand, and some of Hokusai's most famous works come from this series. The print depicts the activity that took place all along the Tatekawa River where many lumber merchants worked. There is a lumber yard on the right-hand side of the picture whose name is legible: “Nishimura Lumber Yard”, actually the name comes from the “Thirty-Six Views” series' publisher, Nishimuraya Yohachi. The way the lumbers are depicted gives verticality to the whole composition. Mount Fuji is glimpsed in the distance and we can surely enjoy watching the lumber merchants working because this adds movement and dynamism to the whole scene. This particular print is a post-war reproduction by Adachi company. There are slight foxing spots at the upper part of this print. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
