Description: This print depicts a man wearing a straw hat and raincoat rafting along the Sumida River under heavy falling snowflakes.

The contrast between the deep blue of the river and the beautiful light snow is one of the highlights of the design, as well as the white spaces indicating snow on the back of the man, and the ones on the branches of the tree.

The format of the print is called tanzaku-ban, and was very popular during the Edo era. This particular dimension made perfect use of a single sheet of washi being cut into four strips vertically.

Most of the time, Hiroshige used this format for nature kacho-e genre (birds/flowers), but he did still produce some landscapes using it.

This version is a post-war reproduction by the Takamizawa Company.
