Description: This print depicts a white heron among blue irises whose feathers were done with kara-zuri or “blind” embossing technique. Kara means “empty” or “without,” indicating that no ink is applied to the raised areas and therefore creating an embossed effect that adds a sense of depth and texture to the print.

There is a poem on the upper area that can be translated like this : "White herons fly low across the fields, like a thousand flakes of snow; Yellow birds perch on the tree, like flowers clustered on a branch”.

The format of the print is called tanzaku-ban, and was very popular during the Edo era. This particular dimension made perfect use of a single sheet of washi being cut into four strips vertically. Many of the prints were actually made 'two-up' and then cut apart for sale later.

This version is a post-war reproduction by the Takamizawa Company.
