Description: From the series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856-1858) which actually contains 118 total prints, in full vertical format of classic Hiroshige landscapes.

Under a starry sky, a group of white foxes are gathered together at an old nettle tree. Indeed, they are the divine messengers of the god of the rice field Inari, and each New Year’s Eve they pay their respects at the Oji Shrine. Here they are on their way to the shrine and we can perceive that far away from the distance, a procession of more foxes is approaching. Next to each fox, Hiroshige depicted a small floating fire flame that farmers count to predict the upcoming rice harvest.

It is interesting how Hiroshige depicts here a supernatural scene, he adds a note of mystery and magic to the atmosphere by using a dark palette where the white of the foxes surely stands out.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction from the Yamada Shoin Company.

There are slight creases on this print.
