Description: This print was designed by Suzuki Harunobu, who contributed significantly to the development of early nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock prints).

In this winter scene it is the middle of a rainy and snowy evening. Two beautiful women share a single umbrella, a beloved subject of Harunobu. They walk quietly along the street, even though it seems that we could almost hear the clatter of their high clogs, their carriage suggests a recent visit to the bathhouse. Their eyes cast downward, they exude a calm serenity.

One striking feature of the print is the atmospheric background that conveys the feeling of a wet winter evening and it is interesting how Harunobu illustrates the heavy rain through oblique symmetrical lines and although the wind itself is invisible, its force is clearly suggested by the direction of the rain.
