Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketYuuhigaoka from '36 Views of Mt. Fuji'Size: 37.0cm by 25.5cm (14.57 in by 10.04 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Ando Hiroshige Era: Recent | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: After the great success of "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido," Hiroshige's next large-scale series of landscape paintings was "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," picking up the theme so successfully treated by his senior Hokusai. It was the last of Hiroshige's major works, and he passed away before it was (posthumously) published in 1876. Although some of his landscapes depict the same locations as Hokusai's series, the nicely balanced composition and color tones in the vertical format give the work a sense of season, poetry, and a calm impression. Yuuhigaoka located near the Meguro River was known as a famous spot for maple trees, but by the end of the Edo period, the number had already decreased, and it is thought that Hiroshige painted it in memory of the past. The cool tones used in this print and the falling leaves set a sentimental mood. This particular print is a reproduction by Adachi company published in 1998.
