Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketIchikoku Bridge from '36 Views of Mt. Fuji'Size: 37.0cm by 25.5cm (14.57 in by 10.04 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Ando Hiroshige Era: Recent | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: After the great success of "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido," Hiroshige's next large-scale series of landscape paintings was "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," picking up the theme so successfully treated by his senior Hokusai. It was the last of Hiroshige's major works, and he passed away before it was (posthumously) published in 1876. Although some of his landscapes depict the same locations as Hokusai's series, the nicely balanced composition and color tones in the vertical format give the work a sense of season, poetry, and a calm impression. This print depicts the Ichikoku-bashi bridge over the Nihonbashi River and Edo Castle in the distance. It was also called the Yatsumi Bridge (eight visible bridges) because they could see eight bridges, including itself when they stood on the bridge. Those crossing the bridge are using parasols and hats to shield themselves from the strong summary sunbeams. This particular print is a reproduction by Adachi company published in 1998. There is slight foxing on the right margin. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
