It is composed of 12 prints and the series' purpose is to show a full day in Shin-Yoshiwara (the pleasure district) by taking a "snapshot" once every two hours. This means that every print corresponds to a different hour of the day. The hour of the dragon is about 8 a.m., which means it is time to be getting up. The scene depicts two young apprentice courtesans waking up but who have not yet had enough sleep, they seem to be settling down a little bit more so they can rest a little bit longer. The floral and colorful patterns used on the clothes and drapes give the scene a joyful touch and they stand out against the plain creamy background. Through this series, Utamaro aimed to show the true face of the district, he surely captured the charms of the women working there and he succeeded to give a glimpse of how their life had been there. There are a few slight creases on this print. Also, there is a small black mark in the upper right part. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
