Description: This print is a proof of the influence of Japanese design on the West during the period after Japan’s ‘opening’ because it was made in England. Indeed, Urushibara was living and working in London and influenced British artists attempting to make woodblock prints following traditional Japanese techniques.

Dave had met Yoshijiro-san's son couple a number of times, and Ichiro-san had been very helpful in providing information about his father's life and work for the 'tribute' website on Urushibara that Dave produced at the time.

You may be familiar with this design - Dave published a shrunk-down reproduction print of a similar heron. It is very interesting how the rain is evoked through simple vertical lines against a plain black background. Even though there is also yellow on the print, the color palette is composed only of black and white and the contrast gives a very modern touch to the whole design. It is also important to highlight the charming embossing or gauffrage on the feathers.

This print came to Mokuhankan from a private collector in England.


This print is toned overall and has a few faint foxing spots on the margins. Also, the top edge shows signs of previous mounting, and the top right corner is torn.
