Description: In this print, Hokusai makes it possible to appreciate a modern sense of composition and color tones as well as a combination of Japanese and Western techniques. Indeed, the stone bridge piles on the left and the river bank on the right are framing the Sumida River in a way a modern camera angle would do.

The rhythmic repetition of shade-off borders used on the bank continuing into the distance in itabokashi (block shading) technique is proof of Hokusai’s interest in Western chiaroscuro. It is worth mentioning how the waves are depicted in the mode of the Rin-pa, the decorative, Neo-classical style of Japanese painting.

The print is framed with a brown border with arabesque patterns recalling the Western style of paintings.

This is a post-war reproduction, from the Adachi company.
