Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketSight at UshigafuchiSize: 19.5cm by 25.5cm (7.68 in by 10.04 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Katsushika Hokusai Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print shows a view of one of the gateways of the Edo Castle (now the Imperial Palace) seen in the distance, near the Ushigafuchi moat and across the top of Kudan Hill. In his artistic career, Hokusai showed a real interest in Western techniques of perspective and shading (chiaroscuro) which we can see in this print. He successfully shows the effect of perspective with a compositional plan of background and foreground. The chiaroscuro example is shown in the use of bokashi (shading off effect) on the earthen dyke covered by the grasses which give also the impression of a velvet-like texture. Hokusai’s observation of Nature is impressive, he successfully introduced three different kinds of atmospheric phenomena into one composition: the haze near the horizon, the evening clouds in the middle sky, and the thunder clouds above. This is a post-war reproduction, from the Adachi company. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
