The initial publisher, Gaikotsu Miyatake, was a journalist and editor who published more than 1000 publications. When he learned that ukiyoe was being bought by foreigners at high prices and that the study of Katsushika Hokusai was more advanced overseas, he began publishing the magazine because he felt that research should be promoted in Japan as well. The magazine was first published in Osaka in 1910 but was discontinued due to a heavy deficit, and a new Tokyo edition was published from 1912 by Musei Asakura, who had contributed to the magazine. The magazine continued to be published until 1914 when it was discontinued with its 24th issue. Each issue contains two woodblock prints. The rest of it is machine-printed, but many interesting pictures are also included (mostly carved on woodblock), which can be enjoyed just by looking at them.
