Description: Yokoyama Taikan (1868–1958) was the art name of a prominent figure in pre-war Japanese painting, best known for his role in the development of Nihonga. Alongside Hishida Shunso, Yokoyama pioneered a new technique that abandoned clear outlines in favor of soft, blurred polychromatic effects, emphasizing tonal gradation over linear form.

Yokoyama was also known for experimenting with various techniques borrowed from Western painting traditions, while his work often remained rooted in the aesthetics of the Rinpa school.

This print features a marine landscape showing a fantastic view of the snow-capped peak of Mount Horai rising above the clouds. Metallic gold pigment is used for the sky lending a subtle shimmer that enhances the overall composition.
Lower in the middle, a village is perched on top of some rocky cliffs above the sea and surrounded by pine trees designed with bold brush strokes. Some birds are flying around enjoying the nice weather…

The original painting was made in 1948 when Yokoyama Taikan was 80 years old and the publisher, Tansei-sha, made it into a woodblock print using 150 impressions probably in the early 1990s.
