Description: This is one of the "Masterpieces of Japanese ink painting" (日本水墨画名品集) published by Tanseisha probably in the 1970s or 1980s. The original ink brush paintings, which express the depth of nature in a world of limited ink colors, were turned into woodblock prints with dozens of impressions by master printers.

This design is considered the best of Shokei’s landscape paintings. He studied under Masayasu Nakayasu at Kencho-ji temple in Kamakura, where he became especially skilled at painting in the traditional style that was unique to that area. In the foreground, you can see a giant rock and a rock wall, with a road between them. The road leads to a gate with some sort of building behind it. A river flows around the rock, all the way into the distance where it disappears behind the rock wall. The empty space in the middle of the composition suggests the long distance between the scenery in the front and the impressive mountain in the distance. Lastly, a few small details catch your eye, such as the two people on their journey in the bottom right corner and the person in a small boat, in the left corner on the river.
