Description: This is one of the "Masterpieces of Japanese ink painting" (日本水墨画名品集) published by Tanseisha probably in the 1970s or 1980s. The original ink brush paintings, which express the depth of nature in a world of limited ink colors, were turned into woodblock prints with dozens of impressions by master printers.

Not much is known about where or when Miyamoto Musashi learned to paint, but most of his work was created while he lived in Kumamoto prefecture, later in his life. This design shows Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese mythology. He is the god of fortune and as usual, he is depicted as a big, bald, smiling man with a curly mustache. What’s interesting about this design is that it shows two different sides of Hotei. The brush strokes along with people’s belief that he was a very warm and easy-going person, show his kind side. However, the way that he’s smiling and watching the cock fight, seems like he also has a cold side, which Musashi thinks, might be his true character.

Note: it may be hard to tell from the web page, but this print is large - almost double the O-ban size. Please check the dimensions indicated at the top.
