Designer: Kitagawa Utamaro Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This is one of Utamaro’s rare landscape prints. Here he represents a crowd of people on a hot summer evening of the Mimachi ritual at the Benten Shrine in Ueno. They are gathered around the Shinobazu Pond, chatting, holding parasols and fans, some teashops are open along the bank. People are crossing the bridge and directing to the shrine located on the back. The sensation of perspective and depth is very well represented here as well as the one of expansion through the spacious pond. The pine trees and the torii gate in the foreground add a vertical magnitude to the composition. The seal of the publisher’s name and the artist’s signature is at the right end.
