Utamaro depicts a full-body image of a geisha standing in a gray kimono with an autumn floral pattern. She is gracefully holding a round, flat fan with one hand and her kimono sleeve with the other while facing slightly to the left. She is looking down at another sitting geisha who is holding a plectrum for playing the koto, the long horizontal stringed instrument lying on the floor. Every detail of the objects on the floor such as the lacquer box, and the insect cage as well as the manners of the women show refinement and grace, hence the title.
