Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketPortrait of Fujiwara TeikaSize: 36.0cm by 50.0cm (14.17 in by 19.69 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [XL] ? Designer: Kano Tanyu Era: Late Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print is a woodblock reproduction of a screen painting from the early 1700s. It was made by the Tansei-sha company (from Kyoto) in the early 1980s, as part of a set of reproductions of classical paintings. This was the 'bubble era' in Japan, when the streets were awash in cash. Projects that would - in more sensible times - have been not financially viable, were able to attract enough buyers to move forward, and Tansei-sha made the most of this opportunity. (As did the Momose Company, which made a large number of reproductions of paintings in the same period.) This print depicts a poet, Fujiwara no Teika, who has been the subject of many paintings. It also includes his poem, "There are no flowers or autumn leaves around, but heart moves with sadness when viewing small cottage bathed in autumn sunset". When Teika goes to the beach, the moon rises in front of the waves, and the sight of wabi-sabi appears. Kano Tanyu was active in the early Edo period as a master of Chinese paintings, but he was also deeply interested in classical paintings, and in a simple painting style, he depicts the poetry and the situation nicely.
