Designer: Kano Motonobu Era: Mid Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print is a woodblock reproduction of a screen painting from the early 1700s. It was made by the Tansei-sha company (from Kyoto) in the early 1980s, as part of a set of reproductions of classical paintings (we have a few others from the set in our catalogue at the moment ...). This was the 'bubble era' in Japan, when the streets were awash in cash. Projects that would - in more sensible times - have been not financially viable, were able to attract enough buyers to move forward, and Tansei-sha made the most of this opportunity. (As did the Momose Company, which made a large number of reproductions of paintings in the same period.) This print is a reproduction of a part of the 49 fusuma-e (襖絵), sliding screen paintings in Myōshin-ji temple (妙心寺) in Kyoto. It's spectacularly depicting a crane crying in the water, using mostly black and white. The set was issued as a 'limited edition' at the time (200 copies), and the one we have is numbered 25, but it should be acknowledged that prints from this series are seen in the wild without numbers, so almost certainly the publisher just kept going after issuing the initial batch.
