Description: This print is from a set "Beauties by Three Great Artists" which consists of 20 reproduction prints by three major beauties designers of the Edo period: Hiroshige, Kunisada, and Eisen, published by Yuyudo in 1975.

This print of Mariko, station no. 21, is part of an untitled series of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tôkaidô Road by Eisen, originally published around the 1830s. In this series, he paired beauties with each of the stations of the famous road by featuring large portraits of beautiful women on the foreground.

In the upper section of this print we can see a vignette of the village of Mariko (also the 21st station of Hiroshige’s Tokaido Route). Some travelers are arriving to the village carrying a lord inside a traditional palanquin called norimono. Three other men are siting inside a house enjoying some tea. A beautiful landscape of mountains and nature completes the background of the station.

In the lower section of the print is a beautiful woman siting on a bench made of bamboo. She is enjoying the summer while looking around her. Her floral patterned yukata is loosely wrapped around her. She is holding a fan and has a handkerchief on top of her legs to dry some of the summer sweat. She is wearing getas (traditional Japanese shoes) and has her hair combed with hairpins and other accessories. We can notice how her hair has been very finely carved.
