A fisherman’s net is caught in mid-throwing as two white herons cross the sky. Some other boats float on the river near the banks of the Tone River hoping to catch some fish. The way the net is covering part of the foreground reveals Hiroshige’s true intentions: he invites the spectator to be the real protagonist of the print…! Even though the title evokes the three scattered pines on the island at the left. Indeed he depicts this scene from the fisherman’s point of view as if we were looking through his eyes.
