Designer: Tosa Mitsuoki / Kano Yoshinobu Era: Taisho | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print is from the series, "The Nippon Mokuhan Gasui" (Masterpieces of od old Japanese colour prints), a collection of reproductions of various themes and designs published around 1924. The accompanying description states that the work is by Tosa Mitsuoki, but it appears that this picture of "koukechi-shi (纐纈師)", the tie-dyeing craftsman, is originally a part of the series of 24 folding screen paintings of Edo period craftsmen by Kano Yoshinobu, originally painted around 1615. Note that the publisher incorporated a great deal of 'antiquing' in the print - imitating the worn condition of the byobu screen - and on top of that we see the natural aging of the woodblock print itself over the past hundred years ...
