Description: This print is from the series, 日本木版画粋 (Masterpieces of Japanese Woodblock Prints), a collection of reproductions of various themes and designs published around 1924. The print quality is excellent (for most of the prints) and there are almost no traces of baren on the back, so we assume that it was at least partially machine printed.

This print by Katsukawa Shunsho is considered his best work. ‘Seven Beauties’ represents the seven different styles of beauty characteristics of that time. The beauties are centered and depicted from head to toe, making this a rather unusual composition. The figures stand out, thanks to their colorful kimono against the simple background.

Shunsho was known for his designs of beauties. The figure he drew during the Anei era all had soft, round faces, but in the second half of the Anei era, they had longer faces and were taller in height.
