Designer: Fujiwara Nobuzane Era: Taisho | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ¥ 8,000$ 64.00£ 50.25€ 58.75 Description: This print is from the series, 日本木版画粋 (Masterpieces of Japanese Woodblock Prints), a collection of reproductions of various themes and designs published around 1924. The print quality is excellent (for most of the prints) and there are almost no traces of baren on the back, so we assume that it was at least partially machine printed. It depicts the portrait of the poet Sosen and is one of the pictures of "Thirty-six Celebrated Poets". The poet is sitting down wearing a blue kimono with a purple coat. He is holding a fan and some white cloth folded like an accordion is leaning behind him. There is no background, but only a white stripe ornamented with some black graphic motifs working as a horizon line dividing the floor from the wall background. We can perceive the calligraphy of a poem written by Yoshitsune Gokyogoku in the background. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
