Description: This print is from the series, "The Nippon Mokuhan Gasui" (Masterpieces of od old Japanese colour prints), a collection of reproductions of various themes and designs published around 1924.

The accompanying description states that the work is by Fujiwara Takakane, but it appears that this picture of "busshi (仏師)", the sculptors of Buddhist statues, is originally a part of the series of 24 folding screen paintings of Edo period craftsmen by Kano Yoshinobu, originally painted around 1615.

Note that the publisher incorporated a great deal of 'antiquing' in the print - imitating the worn condition of the byobu screen - and on top of that we see the natural aging of the woodblock print itself over the past hundred years ...

There are a few foxing spots in the upper part of this print. Also, there is a slight crease in the upper left part.
