Description: From Hiroshige's "Famous Views of the Eastern Capital" series.

The illustration shows the misty moonlight on the shore at Tsukudajima, an island constructed from reclaimed land in Eastern Tokyo in the Edo period. The area is now joined to Tsukishima, known for the famous (former) Tsukiji Fish Market. The foreground depicts some sailboats docked along the shore, their wooden masts add verticality to the composition. A flock of birds flies in front of a full moon, and deep blue bokashi gradation is used at the bottom of the print.

The format of the print is called tanzaku-ban, and was very popular during the Edo era. This particular dimension made perfect use of a single sheet of washi being cut into four strips vertically.

Most of the time Hiroshige used this format for nature kacho-e genre (birds/flowers), but he did still produce some landscapes using it.

This version is a post-war reproduction by the Takamizawa Company.
