The series is characterized by its similarity to the flower-and-bird paintings of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China, accompanied by poems or haiku. The indigo in the background stands out and the white blooming cherry blossoms make a strong impression. The blurring of the throat and belly hair of the bullfinch perched upside down on the branch effectively creates a three-dimensional effect.
