This print is also included in the series called 'Eight Views of Omi' by Utamaro, he reveals the subject in the cartouche at the top left which is 'Returning Sails', a scene on Lake Biwa near Kyoto. But in this print, the true subject is the celebrated and tragic story of the eloping lovers Chubei and Umegawa.
