Designer: Katsukawa Shunko I Era: Pre-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ¥ 10,000$ 86.00£ 72.50€ 81.25 Description: This print is included in a set of 50 prints called "Ukiyo Ekagami," a collection of various artists and genres, which was probably a reproduction in the pre-war period. The print depicts the bust portrait of kabuki actor Ichikawa Komazo II (Matsumoto Koshiro IV) in the role of sumo wrestler Kaminari Tsurunosuke. Actor prints were used to promote the actors at the time, they often show them in a frozen position or "mie", a dramatic pose often accompanied by exaggerated facial expressions, essential to kabuki theater tradition. His deeply sculpted face is standing out on the dark background, this allows us to observe his great facial expressions: he is scowling while pressing his lips, and one hand is subtly touching his chest to reinforce the "mie" in order to show his emotions at their peak. There are a few small traces of glue removal on the backside. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
