Description: In this print, Utamaro depicts a prostitute at the riverside, her hair a little tousled, clutching a perfume pouch and cleaning her teeth with a toothpick. Prostitutes working at the riverside outside the gates of the pleasure district were of the lowest rank, and no doubt this particular prostitute served those who could not afford to enter the Yoshiwara.

The print is from Utamaro's Hokkoku Goshiki-zumi ("Five Shades of Ink in the Northern Quarter") series depicting prostitutes of different ranks from in and around the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters in Edo (Tokyo). The Yoshiwara was graded in to five classes, they were Oiran, Geigi, Kiri no musume, Kashi and Teppo, All prints in the series have a yellow background and feature inkstick-shaped series title panels.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction by the Takamizawa Company.

This print is a little toned overall.
