Designer: Maruyama Okyo Era: Taisho | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print is from the series, "The Nippon Mokuhan Gasui" (Masterpieces of old Japanese colour prints), a collection of reproductions of various themes and designs published around 1924. This print depicts two peacocks under a maple tree. It is not very common to see white or albino peacocks in nature, nevertheless, the principal subject here is a white and beautiful one who is spreading out his feathers to display his whole tail. The main purpose of this behavior is to mate and shoo away potential male rivals. A second peacock, green and blue is under and behind his white rival, his tail is folded and he presents a submissive attitude as if he had been beaten by this first one. They were probably courting a female peahen and now we know who was the winner. It comes with a description sheet in English and Japanese.
