Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai, published between 1831-34. Originally intended to be a set of 36, ten more were added to it due to its popularity, thus the total of 46 prints. The popularity of this series established landscape as a genre along with Yakusha-e (portraits of actors) and Bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women). The distinctive feature of these printings is the use of imported chemical dye, Prussian blue. In the additional 10 prints, black ink is used for the key block, while Prussian blue is used for the other 36 prints. This reprinted edition was issued in a limited edition of 300 copies in the postwar period by Hodo Shuppan Sha and is housed in a luxurious case. The prints are beautifully finished in rich color, thanks to the skills of the great carvers and printers, including Mr. Susumu Ito, and we can appreciate the stunning work in the same large format as the originals.
