Description: "The Treasury of Loyal Retainers" (仮名手本忠臣蔵, Kana dehon Chūshingura) is an 11-act bunraku puppet play composed in 1748. It is one of the most popular Japanese plays and many Ukiyoe artists such as Hokusai and Kuniyoshi also designed the prints on the theme.

The story of "Kanadehon Chushingura" incorporates the seasons of "spring, summer, autumn, and winter" and depicts the world of the lord, warriors, merchants, peasants, pleasure quarters, and the world of each class. The story is an eleven-stage epic drama that weaves together people weeping over righteousness, passion, death, and love.

This version is by Ipposai Kuniaki, published around 1868 as a set of 12. The period can be sensed through the characteristic purple color, methyl violet (one of the color materials used in ukiyo-e woodblock prints produced in the late Edo and early Meiji periods). Although they are not high-end prints in terms of quality, the color remains good and we can appreciate this amazing set in 150 years.
