Designer: Ando Hiroshige Era: Mid Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This is a print from what is perhaps the single most famous series of Japanese woodblock prints ever produced - "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido", designed by Hiroshige in the 1830s. The print you see here is a reproduction version produced in the post-war period by one of the numerous publishing houses working at that time (Adachi, Takamizawa, Yuyudo, Bijutsu-sha, Yamada Shoin, Kyoto Hanga-in, etc.) Here at Mokuhankan we have a wide selection of such prints, far too many to scan and prepare for the website one by one. We don't always have every print in this series in stock, but try to keep as many of them available as possible. The one you see in this photo is on hand, but feel free to contact us about other designs in this series that you don't see on the site ... Image information: Everything - trees, land, houses, stone walls - is covered with snow but the sub-title of the image ('yuki-bare' in the vermilion cartouche) tells us that this is a bright sunny day. A long daimyo procession is climbing up the steep slope, with a barely visible horse carrying heavy loads. Towering at the top of the slope is the turret of Kameyama castle. The wooden fence beside the stone wall is Kyo-guchi gate leading to Kameyama station. The beautiful red glow is seen beyond the hills on the left although much is blocked by high mountains. The group of houses seen at the lower left is Nomura village. Most of the image is expressed by achromatic color - gray, black and white. However, a few colors - used only for the sky and people in the procession - work as very effective accents. This particular print was published by Adachi company probably in the 1970s or 1980s.
