Designer: Utagawa Kunisada Era: Mid Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: In this print Kunisada is depicting the portrait of Yaoya Oshichi the daughter of the greengrocer Tarobei. The story, which became a famous subject for kabuki plays, tells that she felt in love with a monk while she was taking refuge inside a temple during the great fire in the Tenna Era. With the hope of seeing him again, the next year she committed arson and this fire ended destroying a large part of Edo. Here, she is adjusting the bow of her obi behind her back. This full body portrait let us appreciate all her beauty and clothes. She is wearing a green forest kimono with purple geometrical patterns and a border of ducks swimming on streams making her look as if she was standing on a flack of water herself. Even if she is standing still, her clothes give a lot of flowing movement to the print. This particular print is a post-war reproduction by Yamada Shoin. There are some small chiri (mulberry bark scraps) and slight foxing spots this print. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
