Description: This print is from a series of 18 prints published in 1923 by different artists illustrating the works of the famous playwright Chikamatsu Manzaemon. Each design represents a character from one of Chikamatsu's plays.

In this print, Yamaguchi Shohei represented this man who is holding strongly a short sword. He is wearing a gray yukata, has a traditional samurai haircut ('chonmage'), and is scowling and clenching his teeth, all these clues make us imagine he is some kind of samurai or interesting warrior preparing for battle.

This print has a restrained but elegant palette of gray, beige, and light blue. This concern for simplicity is not only visible in the colors or in the use of simple lines for the design, but also in the background which doesn't have any landscape or figurative element. However, we can perceive what seems like brushstrokes, some darker than the others resulting in a chiaroscuro game of shadows giving some dimension to the print. The sobriety of the background makes this warrior samurai stand out even more and makes us, the viewers, focus more on him and on his facial expression.

This print is toned overall and has some spots, and creases but is in good condition for the age remaining nice colors.
