Description: This print is part of a 3 volume book: "Illustrated Account of the Mongol Invasion" (Mōko Shūrai Ekotoba) published in 1916. It was originally a 13th-century Japanese scroll commissioned by the samurai Takezaki Suenaga (1246–1314)recording the Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281. This unique record is an important eyewitness account with the purpose of recounting his wartime deeds and valor. The original scrolls suffered the passage of time and went through different restorations.

The first scroll describes Suenaga's actions at the Battle of Bun'ei (1274), as well as his attempts to seek recognition and rewards from the government. The second scroll describes him at the naval Battle of Kōan (1281).

In this print, we can perceive a part of what was the battle of Bun'ei. This specific part illustrates the cavalry of Michiyasu Shiraishi, who rushed to rescue Suenaga. ("Shiraishi Rokuro Michiyasu, more than 100 horsemen, from the apse").

The man riding at the front is holding a white banner, and more samurais are following him while holding their bows and shooting arrows some of which are already on the ground. They are all wearing samurai armor and despite the war theme, the palette of vivid colors of red, blue, yellow, and green on their clothes, gives pleasure to the eyes.

This print is toned overall and has some spots and creases but is in good condition for the age remaining nice colors.
