Description: This print, "Kanjincho" (The Subscription List), is from the set "The 18 Famous Kabuki Plays" made popular by the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors.

This is the portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro in the role of the warrior monk Musashibo Benkei. The portrait inset is bordered with the three concentric rice measure "Mimasu-mon": the crest of the actor family. There is a pine branch on the upper right and a gourd container on the lower left.

The vivid palette of the clothes catches the eye and adds a bidimensional effect to the print: the outer robe of the kimono has a vivid cobalt blue contrasting with a yellow star pattern enhanced by a red floral stole. The inner green robe with floral motifs is boosted at the same time by the other colors. He is also wearing a black monk hat. The exaggerated size of the bulging eyes reinforces the facial expression of the actor with a very firm and strong look while holding and reading a paper.

There is a small dent in the upper right area of this print.
