Description: "The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō" is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige around 1835-1837. It consists of a total of 70 prints of 69 stops along the Nakasendo route between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Tarui-juku was the fifty-seventh of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō. It is located in the former Mino Province in what is now part of the town of Tarui, Fuwa District, Gifu Prefecture.

The print depicts a daimyō procession approaching all along a pine tree-lined route. In the center of the print, an officer of the station walks beneath an umbrella forewarning villagers and travelers to kneel in order to show their respect. On both sides of the road, proprietors and customers are humbling themselves and kneeling.

Grey stone walls mark the border of the post station, and the advance guard of the procession, wearing straw raincoats, has already crossed them. The chair with the daimyō (the master) inside can be seen coming into view in the center between the stately pine trees. On both sides of the composition, we can perceive there are commerces. The one on the left is a restaurant advertising ochanozuke, a rice dish made with tea, and has prints for sale hanging inside. On the right, a teashop is displaying beauty and landscape prints.

All this scene is happening under heavy rain which is suggested by oblique black lines we can perceive in the foreground, they come from a black sky suggesting an interesting serious mood of this special life scene of the Edo period.

This particular print is a reproduction probably from the Taisho period (1912-1926).

This print is toned overall and has a linear color loss in the upper left part.
