Description: "The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō" is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige around 1835-1837. It consists of a total of 70 prints of 69 stops along the Nakasendo route between Tokyo and Kyoto.

This series chronicles life along the Kiso Highway, the upper road along the mountains from Edo to Kyoto, mirroring the lower Tokaido.

Nakatsugawa-juku is the forty-fifth station of the Nakasendo, it is located in the former Mino Province in what is now part of the city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture. It is situated in mountainous terrain, with the Nakatsugawa river flowing by a post station.

This print depicts three travelers (maybe samurais) in green cloaks and straw hats walking down the banks of the Nakatsugawa River in a downpour. Two of them have red backpacks and the third carries a long spear with its blade wrapped in a red cloth. In the background are the thatch-roofed buildings of the post station, with several other similarly green-cloaked figures in various poses. We can perceive a few white egrets wading near the marshy shore.

It is interesting how the straight black lines of the foreground together with the black color of the sky project a gloomy rain that gives the stormy mood to the print.

This particular print is a reproduction probably from the Taisho period (1912-1926).

This print is toned and has spots mostly on the margins.
