Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketLarge Wave at HonmokuSize: 20.0cm by 29.0cm (7.87 in by 11.42 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Katsushika Hokusai Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This work is one of his earliest works depicting great waves when Hokusai was in his 50s whereas the world-famous 神奈川沖浪裏 (The Great Wave off Kanagawa) was painted when he was in his 70s. This is one of a series of Western-style landscape prints with arabesque frames. It is thought to depict the area around Honmoku Cape (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture), which was a major transportation hub during the Edo period and where many ships came and went. The itabokashi (block shading) technique is used on both sides of the waves and in the shadows of the surrounding mountains to create a three-dimensional effect of large undulating waves and raised mountains. This is a reprint edition published by Adachi probably in the post-war period. There are a few spots in the upper left part of this print. Also, there is a slight trace of removal of glue on the backside. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
