Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketThe Fickle TypeSize: 40.0cm by 26.0cm (15.75 in by 10.24 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Kitagawa Utamaro Era: Mid Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print, titled Uwaki no so, is also known under English titles like "The Coquettish Type", "The Capricious Type", "The Fancy-free Type", and so on. While the word uwaki is now used in Japanese to refer to sexual unfaithfulness, in Utamaro's day it was used to refer to someone with a fickle or flighty personality. In this print, Utamaro depicts a young woman just out of the bath. Her hair is wet and pulled up into a bai-mage (spiral-shell chignon) with a kanzashi hairpin, and she dries her hands on the cloth hanging over her shoulder. Her yukata (light summer kimono) rests loosely around her shoulders. The print is from Utamaro's Fujin Sōgaku Juttai (Ten Types in the Physiognomic Study of Women) series originally produced from 1792 to 1793. Please visit our Collection page where you can see our own preserved copy of the set "Utamaro Beauties" including this print at high-resolution. This particular print is a post-war reproduction by Yamada Shoin. There are a few small chiri (mulberry bark scraps) and a few small marks on this print.
