Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketThunder God / Wind God (pair)Size: 48.5cm by 59.5cm (19.09 in by 23.43 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [XL] ? Designer: Korin/Sotatsu Era: Late Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This pair of large-format prints are woodblock reproductions of a screen painting from the early 1700s. It was made by the Yuyudo company in the 1980s. (The dimension listed is for each print) This was the 'bubble era' in Japan, when the streets were awash in cash. Projects that would - in more sensible times - have been not financially viable, were able to attract enough buyers to move forward, and Yuyudo (along with Tansei-sha and Momose) undertook the production of a number of quite spectacular projects during the period. The original painting is known as 紙本金地著色風神雷神図 (Gods of Wind and Thunder), and depicts two gods from Shinto and Japanese mythology: Raijin, the god of lightning, thunder, and storms, and Fūjin, the god of wind. They make quite a spectacular pair, and we can't imagine any circumstances that would allow such a project to proceed these days. Neither the wood, the paper, or craftsmen with the requisite experience to do this work exists anymore ... (Note that the discoloration in the white and the mottling of the green are intentional; the intent of the publisher was to create the antique effect of the painting that they were reproducing ...) This set is editioned No.112. There are some spots at the margins on each print but they are in good condition overall. A mockup of how the pair might look in a typical (?) home? (We have prepared a .zip package of the two images, so that you can try making your own mockup, using a photo of your own environment.) Printer: Endo / Carver: Matsuda Their edition numbering: 112 Over the years, the pigments/metals used to create the background have 'oxidized' to a degree, leaving this mottling on the print (there are also 'shadows' from some previous matting ...)
