Designer: Ando Hiroshige Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This post war print by the Takamizawa Company depicts an almost catlike little owl taking a nap on a pine branch, and is one of Hiroshige's most iconic kacho-e (nature images). The crescent moon is cleverly concealed under part of the silhouetted branch, and deep blue bokashi gradation is used at the top of the print. There is a poem on the upper area that can be translated like this : ”The sound comes from pines swayed by the wind - pine wind’s koto. Boarding the crescent moon pleasure boat, the owl departs for a mountain excursion“. The format of the print is called tanzaku-ban, and was very popular during the Edo era. This particular dimension made perfect use of a single sheet of washi being cut into four strips vertically. Many of the prints were actually made 'two-up' and then cut apart for sale later. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
