Description: This is a print from what is perhaps the single most famous series of Japanese woodblock prints ever produced - "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido", designed by Hiroshige in the 1830s.

The print you see here is a reproduction version produced in the post-war period by one of the numerous publishing houses working at that time (Adachi, Takamizawa, Yuyudo, Bijutsu-sha, Yamada Shoin, Kyoto Hanga-in, etc.) Here at Mokuhankan we have a wide selection of such prints, far too many to scan and prepare for the website one by one.

Image information: Oiso is the 9th station of the Tokaido. In the heavy rain people are walking in straw rain gear. On the right we still see Mt. Koma, which appeared in the previous Hiratsuka station. Many parts of Tokai-road ran along the sea shore and were constantly exposed to the strong salty wind. In such an environment most trees are damaged by the salty wind but pine trees - especially Japanese black pine trees - have a strong tolerance to salt. In this image many pine trees are planted along the shore. They must have protected this station from the strong wind constantly blowing from the sea.

The vermilion seal in the title reads ’Tora no ame’, indicating that this is the rainy season.

Hiroshige skillfully depicted the gloomy mood by using many techniques such as black 'ichimonji bokashi' (a rubbing technique of straight-line blurring) from the top, and a very subtle gradation up from the horizon. The beautiful blue color on the sea is also a very nice accent.

The next station - Odawara - is nearly 16 km down the highway, so the travelers needed to take adequate rest here!
